5 Signs It’s Time To Get Heating and Air Conditioning Repair

11/30/2022 FiveChannels 0 Comments

There are approximately 127 million households in the U.S. One thing that virtually all of them have in common is an HVAC system of some kind to maintain a regulated temperature in the home.

For some, it’s just a furnace for the cold weather. In the majority of homes, though, you see split-system HVAC setups with a furnace unit inside and an AC unit outside.

Most heating and cooling units will hum along just fine for years. At some point, you’ll almost certainly need heating and air conditioning repair.

1. The System Won’t Turn On

One pretty obvious sign that you need an HVAC repair service is that the system simply won’t turn on when you adjust your thermostat. A lot of things can cause a problem like that, most of which you can’t fix yourself.

One thing you can do is take a look at your breaker box. Every once in a while, a slight surge will throw the breaker into the off position.

If that’s the problem, flip it back. If the system trips the breaker again, it’s time for professional help.

2. The System Makes Odd Sounds

Every HVAC system makes some noises. Depending on how well insulated your home is, you may hear the furnace fire up, the AC activate, or the blower turn on.

If your system kicks on and makes noises you don’t recognize, it’s often a sign that something has broken. At that point, you should call in an HVAC pro to diagnose the problem.

3. The System Doesn’t Turn Off

A different, but equally vexing problem is when the system doesn’t turn off or runs for far longer than it normally does. When this happens, it’s a sign that the system isn’t working as designed.

Your furnace or AC should run for a while, then turn itself off.

4. Strange Odors

The very first time you turn on your AC or furnace in a given year, it’s normal for it to smell a little odd. If your HVAC system starts emitting strange odors at any other time, that’s a problem that needs professional attention.

5. Short Cycling

Another problem sign that you might notice is that your system keeps turning on for a short time, then turning off, then almost immediately turning back on. That’s called short cycling and it has several possible causes. You’ll need an HVAC repair tech to track down the culprit.

Do You Need Heating and Air Conditioning Repair?

Sometimes, your HVAC system will act up and then self-correct. When a problem recurs, though, that’s a pretty good sign that you need heating and air conditioning repair.

Keep an eye out for problems like strange noises, strange odors, short cycling, and your system running for longer than seems necessary.
